This post is about Sola Wood Flowers!
And no, I’m not a partner with them (even though I’ve tried). I just noticed that a lot of my couples were using this and I liked the idea of having some on hand.
Some people are super excited about having custom florals for their wedding. I’m happy to connect those people with an amazing local florist who will ethically source the flowers, keep them fresh and clean for you, and bring your vision to life.
This post is not for those people. This is for the people who want flowers so it’s obvious that they’re getting married, but don’t necessarily see the value of having high-quality fresh florals. There is nothing wrong with how you feel about flowers, whether you love them, you see them as checking the box for your wedding, or you don’t want them at all. My goal is for you to do what works best for you, and for some people, fresh flowers are not part of that equation.
What are Sola Wood Flowers?
They’re made from sola wood, which comes from a tapioca plant root. You can read a more detailed description on their website.
I had an idea to have artificial bouquets on hand for a few reasons:
This can eliminate decisions and costs for something you might not care that much about.
I’ve had some people decide at the last minute to get a grocery store bouquet and boutonnière. Sometimes they barely get used and the couple feels like they shouldn’t have even bothered going out of their way to get it. Sometimes it’s the cheapest option available and they feel no attachment to it. If you borrow mine, you can use it as much or as little as you’d like without feeling guilty.
This can be reused.
It won’t die the next day or take up space in your house. If you use one of my bouquets, then your flowers require no additional production, shipping materials, or fuel. They carpool with me and you hand it back when we’re done so someone else can use it later.
It can be a backup.
I’ve had multiple people forget their bouquets and we didn’t have enough time to go back and get them. My flowers can be an option so you don’t have to go empty-handed if that happens.
Options for Sola Wood Flowers
Option 1: DIY the whole thing
If you choose this option, you will receive undyed and unassembled flowers with the dyes you choose. You will dye and assemble the flowers yourself. They offer some guidance through their website on how to do this. You can either buy a pack of flowers and come up with the arrangement yourself, or you can have one of the existing arrangements sent to you IKEA-style with the materials you need. This is the least expensive option, but the most labor-intensive.
Option 2: a pre-assembled bouquet that you see on their store.
You would choose the “BIFM” (build it for me) option. Be aware that the price that they list is for the DIY option, so the BIFM option nearly doubles the price and processing time since a professional is taking the time to put it together for you.
Option 3: Design a custom bouquet.
This gives you the option to choose every single color, accent flowers, greenery, or scents. This is the most expensive option and the one that takes the longest, but it’s the most tailored to you. You can add accent flowers, like sunflowers or daisies.
Side note: I love cascade bouquets, but not for this. Since these stems are rigid, it’s really obvious if you’re not holding it exactly right because the bottom won’t point to the bottom.
Questions you might have about Sola Wood Flowers
What does it feel like?
The flowers feel like foam. It feels lighter than some of the real bouquets I’ve held, which can be heavy. The video ads show them being squished like a stress ball.
What does it smell like?
You can have them infused with scents, like rosemary or lavender. I chose not to because scents can be overwhelming sometimes. Mine smell like when you’re walking around Michael’s and you end up in the wreath aisle.
How long does it take to arrive?
Mine were built for me, which takes extra time on their end. It took about a month to receive what I ordered. This is not a good fit for someone who’s getting married next week.
How do you store it?
Mine arrived in a box that had a layer of cardboard with a hole for the stems. I keep the flowers in this box so it doesn’t get bumped around when I drive.
What kind of flowers do you have for people to borrow?
Currently, I have a white one that they advertise on their site and a rainbow one I designed myself. I figured white can go with anything and rainbow is a catch-all for people who love color as much as I do. I have white boutonnieres since those coordinate with both bouquets. Maybe I’ll get some more bouquet designs if enough people use them—I love the idea of having a classic red rose one and some more seasonal color palettes.
The rainbow bouquet I designed myself to let other people use.
What kind of products can you get through Sola Wood Flowers?
Technically, you can DIY whatever you want out of these if you buy loose flowers and tape/wire it right. I had one couple use this for their cake and and dog collars. They have some designs on their website specifically made for things like wedding arches, table runners, and wreaths.
I hope this helped you get some ideas of what kind of flowers you want for your wedding, or if you want flowers at all. If you’re still looking for a photographer, read more about my elopement and engagement photography services!
Ready for the best day ever?
My name is Christine (Scott) Gow and I’m an elopement photographer based out of Greenville, South Carolina. I’m a wife and a beagle mom. The three of us have visited beautiful places in every corner of South Carolina, to include all of our state parks. We love finding new outdoor places to visit, but we also love hanging out on the couch and watching Pixar movies.
One thing I love about South Carolina is that it’s not just the beaches and colorful houses that you imagine when you picture it. Whether you’re looking for mountains, beaches, or anything in between; I can help you find the perfect place for the two of you and make it as smooth of a day as possible. No matter how you two choose to spend your day, I’m happy you’re doing it the way that you want.
I can’t wait to meet you!
